Highway Amazon by Ronnie Cramer
12 minutes, 2004
Its no secret that many couples enjoy casual wrestling in bed, but you might be surprised to learn that there are professional women traveling the country to wrestle men in hotel rooms. Highway Amazon introduces us to superwoman Christine Fetzer and offers a glimpse into her life. And a glimpse it is; clocking in at barely 12 minutes, the short leaves the viewer with more questions than answers. How does she get appointments? How did she get into the profession? These and other curiosities linger in the viewers mind, but Fetzers awkward monologue sprinkled between the hilarious sessions makes the documentary worth the time. 'They wanna feel small and weak,' she says about her clients. 'It turns them on to be dominated.' Match time for the Amazon is Friday, Feb. 18, at 4:45 p.m. - Eric Segalstad

Pillow Girl
Experimental
Directed by Ronnie Cramer, Denver, CO
What began as a sound/art piece of work has evolved into so much more. Musician/artist Ronnie Cramer scanned the covers and inside pages of a number of lurid, vintage paperbacks some 150 covers in all. He then ran the collected images and text data through a variety of synthesizers, creating a collection of electronic soundscapes. PILLOW GIRL makes use of the covers themselves, with one illustrated figure morphing into the next every two seconds, creating a bizarre new art form that is at once both hypnotically beautiful and strangely disorienting.

Pillow Girl 9 short film - Ronnie Cramer
An utterly ingenious short film that really blew my mind with its simple complexities. Basically morphing hundreds of covers for old pulp books (from trashy tales of lust to mysteries to old laddie mags) around the woman in each cover. It becomes a beautiful examination of the sexual violence and lust that still infects how many men view women. The one woman with a thousand faces (each cover dissolves and reforms using the woman as the focal point, so it appears that it is the same woman in ever picture) becomes both victim and accuser as we see how sex and violence have sold out womens rights in order to make a buck. The best short I saw all weekend and one to really look for if you can. Tremendous work. - The Grim Ringler

Fast-forward through the boobs; stay for the loser
EVEN HITLER HAD A GIRLFRIEND
There are so many great scenes in this movie. The drama that is the rise-and-fall of Marcus Templeton is engaging and believable; Andren Scott hits the nail on the head as the archetype of the good-natured, clueless, pathetic sap.
Like Homer Simpson and George Costanza, everyone knows a Marcus, and will probably recognize a little bit of Marcus in themselves.
I can honestly say that this movie has some of the best tragically comic, pathetically poignant one-liners of any movie: 'Can I at least touch your breasts? Well can I at least see them for a minute? Would you like to go home now?'
It's unfortunate then, that the bad scenes (i.e. the 'sexy stripper' scenes) are so prolific and long. You will ask yourself 'were hot girls really that lame and homely in the late eighties?' These seemingly never-ending, awkward strip teases will have the whole room uncomfortable, and the god-awful, noodle-doodle electric guitar accompaniment will serve to heighten the pain.
But then again, that's what the remote control is for... - L. Ron Hagar

The Modern Pea Pod: Left of West
A couple of months ago, I was lucky enough to see a short piece at the Ann Arbor Film Festival called Pillow Girl by Ronnie Cramer. It was a 'sound-art' work, the most ballyhooed element of which was its soundtrack, electronically created by scanning the covers and inside pages of several tawdry pulp novels and running the resultant binary code through a series of synthesizers. Interesting concept, although it ended up sounding an awful lot like muzak on Valium. What was far more appealing to me, however, was the visual aspect: a series of those very same pulp covers, in all their semi-pornographic glory, blending hypnotically into one another with that cool 'morphing' effect from Michael Jackson's 'Black or White' video. It was a fantastic piece - not necessarily because of the sociopolitical subtext (all those exploited women merging together until they're one faceless, big-busted mass), but because, cheap and trashy though it may be, there's something appealing about pulp/exploitation art. Yes, it's sexist...unashamedly so. But at its best, it's also a bold, unadulterated, unpretentious celebration of female sexuality, one of the few (somewhat) legitimate venues for that kind of thing in the 1940's and '50's. The best pulp art is sexier - not to be confused with dirtier - than any Penthouse centerfold could ever hope to be...and if that's not good art, I don't know what is.

Even for those who will think 'Pillow Girl' runs its kaleidoscope too long, this is an ingenious short film. All it does is morph from cover to cover to cover of pulp books and magazines from decades ago - a meticulous parade of romance novel covers, to detective fiction covers, to men-at-war covers. As a parade of narrow themes, it titillates and disturbs and somehow does not feel like a time gone by or an attitude we've outgrown. - Chuck Jaffee
